REI means Spiritual Wisdom & KI means Life Energy
REIKI is a Japanese technique for Stress Reduction & Relaxation that also promotes Healing. It was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, born in the early 1800's. Usui studied healing techniques, from the early ages of 4yrs with the Tendai Buddhists on Mt. Kurama, in Japan. The Tendai Buddhist Temple was formed in 770 A.D and was known for soul & energy enlightenment, and Mt. Kuruma renowned as a "Power Spot". The Reiki you'll experience today is called the "Usui Tibetan Reiki" and is administered by "Laying Hands On" while the positive Reiki energy flows to the areas in your body that need healing. Reiki is a very simple yet a powerful technique.
We are alive because Ki (Life Energy) is flowing through our bodies. Ki flows within the physical body through pathways called Chakras, Meridians & Nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the Aura. The free & balanced flow of Ki is the cause of health. It is Ki that animates the physical organs & tissues as it flows through them. Ki nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When the flow of Ki is disrupted, it causes diminished functioning within one or more of the organs & tissues of the physical body. Therefore, it is the disruption in the flow of Ki that is the main cause of illness. What Reiki does is restore the flow of Ki to the body.
CAN REIKI BE COMPLEMENTARY TO REGULAR MEDICAL TREATMENT?
You can continue to receive regular medical or psychological treatment while receiving Reiki, with improved results. In fact, Reiki will improve the results of any medical treatment, acting to reduce negative side effects, such as those from chemotherapy, surgery & invasive procedures. It shortens healing time, reduces stress & helps create optimism. It has been regularly noted that patients receiving Reiki leave the hospital earlier than those who don't.
IS REIKI A RELIGION?
While Reiki is Spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to receive Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all & will work whether you believe in it or not. Reiki comes from God, it enables many people to go beyond intellectual concepts & directly experience their religion and beliefs.
REIKI IN HOSPITALS:
A survey conducted in 2007 indicates that in the previous year 1.2 million adults & 161,000 children in the U.S. received one or more energy healing sessions such as Reiki.
Reiki is also gaining wider acceptance in the medical establishment. Hospitals are incorporating it into their roster of patient services, often with their own Reiki-Trained physicians, nurses & support staff. Reiki was in use in hospitals operating rooms as early as the mid-90's11. Since then its acceptance in medicine has grown. It is now listed in a nursing "scope & standards of practice" publication as an accepted form of care2, and a 2008 USA Today article reported that in 2007 15% of U.S. hospitals (over 800) offered Reiki as a regular part of patient services3.
A research study at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut indicates that Reiki improved patient sleep by 86%, reduced pain by 78% reduced nausea by 80%, and reduced anxiety during pregnancy by 94%4. Kirlan photography is a technique of photographing the etheric energy patterns around living things. Below you'll see a Kirlan image of a Reiki Practitioner giving a hands on treatment. The white beam of light is the Reiki energy flowing from the practitioner's hand and the circles are the different placements of fingers at different times.
